Rice weeders eating, 1950
Vercelli, 06/1950
In June, for 40 days, thousands of women from the Pavia countryside weed the rice in exchange for a kilo of rice a day and absurdly low pay. They sleep in dilapidated dormitories and live under an almost military regime, both at work and during their hours of rest. Bent over all day in the paddy fields with water up to their knees, they sing to hide the sadness and fatigue that only poverty makes bearable
