Frequently asked questions
Answers to the most common questions about licences, files, payments, archive research and fine art prints.
Licences and prices
What is an editorial licence?
It is permission to publish a photo from the archive to tell facts, history and culture: in a book, a magazine, a website, a lesson. It does not cover advertising or the promotion of products or services.
You do not buy the photograph or the copyright, which remain with Archivi Farabola, and the same photo may also be licensed to others.
Which licence do I need?
It depends on where you publish the photo: Books & web for books, catalogues, websites and social media; Periodicals for magazines and newspapers, in print or online; Education for school textbooks.
On each photo page you will find the licences with price and terms: print run, language, country and duration. If you are not sure, write to us.
What do print run, country and duration mean?
Print run: the maximum number of printed copies, or of digital copies sold or downloaded.
One country: the publication is distributed in a single country; for more countries you need a quote.
Duration: the period in which you may publish the photo, from the date of purchase. Copies already distributed may remain in circulation afterwards.
Can I use the same photo for another project?
Each licence covers one project only: a book, an issue of a magazine, an article, a website or a social media profile. Reprints, new editions, translations and other projects need a new licence, unless agreed otherwise.
My use is not among the online licences: what do I do?
Covers, advertising, exhibitions, TV and documentaries, large print runs, several countries or languages are licensed on quotation. Write to us with the photo, the use, print run, country and duration: we reply within 2 working days.
Do you offer terms for frequent buyers?
Yes: for educational publishers there are annual agreements for 25, 50 or 100 photos, and for magazines and newspapers packages of 20 photos a year. Write to us and we will prepare an offer.
Files and downloads
What file do I receive?
A high-resolution JPG file, without the Farabola watermark, with the size and resolution shown on each photo page. After payment the download link arrives by email and is valid for 7 days: download and keep the file.
I haven't received the email with the file: what should I do?
The link arrives right after payment. If you can't find the email, check your spam or junk folder. If the link has expired or you have problems with the download, write to info@farabola.com with your order number.
Can I try the photo before buying it?
Yes: with the «Comp» button on the photo page you download a low-resolution trial file, to lay out or present your project for no more than 30 days. The comp may not be published: to publish you need the licence.
Do you have a larger file or a scan of the original?
For many photos, yes: we can make new scans of the original negatives. Write to us with the photo code, which you find on the photo page under «Image number».
Use, editing and credit
Can I crop or edit the photo?
You may crop it, resize it and slightly adjust brightness and contrast. You may not change its meaning: no photomontages, colourisation, adding or removing people, or retouching that alters the historical document.
How should I credit the photo?
Next to the photo or on the credits page, write «© Archivi Farabola», or «Foto Name Surname © Archivi Farabola» when the photographer is named on the photo page. In videos it goes in the end credits, on social media in the post caption.
Do I need permission from the people portrayed?
For editorial and informational uses (news, history, culture, education) usually not. For advertising or commercial uses you may need the consent of the people portrayed or their heirs, of trademark owners or of the rights holders of works shown in the photo: obtaining it is the responsibility of whoever uses the image. If in doubt, write to us before publishing.
Can I use the photos for artificial intelligence?
No. The photos and files may not be used to train or feed artificial intelligence systems, nor to generate other images: they are authentic historical documents and must not be used to create fake ones.
Payments, invoices and VAT
How can I pay?
By credit or debit card, PayPal, Apple Pay, Google Pay and Klarna. Payment is protected and encrypted.
Can I get an invoice?
Yes, for both licences and prints. In the cart, before paying, tick «I need an invoice» and enter your company name, VAT number and SDI code or PEC: we will send you the electronic invoice.
Do prices include VAT?
Licences: prices are shown + VAT. VAT is calculated at checkout based on your country: in Italy it is 22%. EU businesses that enter a valid VAT number at checkout do not pay VAT. Outside the European Union VAT does not apply.
Prints: prices include VAT; outside the European Union the price is without Italian VAT. Shipping is added in the cart.
You always see the total before confirming.
Can I get a refund?
Licences: digital photos are downloaded immediately, so with the purchase and download you waive the right of withdrawal for digital content. If the file is faulty or does not match the photo purchased, we will replace it or refund you.
Prints: you can return them within 14 days of delivery (see «Fine art prints» below).
Research and quotes
I can't find the photo I need: can you help?
Yes. Many photos in the archive are not online yet: we search on request for publishers, newsrooms, TV and exhibitions. Write to us with the subject, period and intended use: we reply within 2 working days.
How can I contact you?
Write to info@farabola.com or use the form on the Contact page: we reply within 2 working days.
Fine art prints
How are the prints made?
Each print comes from the original negative kept in the Farabola Archive. It is printed to order by WhiteWall, a professional European lab, on Hahnemühle FineArt Baryta paper, and checked by hand before shipping.
Which sizes can I choose?
Portrait and landscape photographs are available in A4 (21 × 29.7 cm), A3 (29.7 × 42 cm) and A2 (42 × 59.4 cm); square ones in 30 × 30, 40 × 40 and 60 × 60 cm. Each size is available unframed or with a black or white frame. If you need a different size, write to us at info@farabola.com.
What is the frame like?
A real wood frame, black or white, with a slim 20 mm profile, made to measure. Inside there is a 5 cm acid-free museum board mat with a bevelled cut, and in front an anti-reflective Artglass AR museum glass. There is a hanger on the back: it arrives ready to hang.
How much does shipping cost and how long does it take?
The print arrives within 7-10 working days of your order and, when it ships, you receive the tracking number. In Italy shipping costs from €8.95 without a frame and from €14.95 with a frame; the exact cost, which depends on size and number of prints, appears in the cart before payment.
Do you ship abroad? Are there customs duties?
Yes. Prints ship from the European Union, so there are no duties in EU countries. Outside the EU the price is without Italian VAT; any duties and taxes of the destination country are paid by the buyer and, where possible, are shown at checkout. Costs by country are in the shipping policy.
Can I return a print?
Yes, within 14 days of delivery, even if you have simply changed your mind: write to info@farabola.com with your order number. The print must be sent back undamaged in its packaging, at your expense; the refund is made to the same payment method.
What if it arrives damaged?
If the packaging is damaged, report it to the courier. If the print is damaged or different from your order, write to us within 14 days of delivery with your order number and a photo: we will replace it or refund you in full, at our expense.
Can I give it as a gift and have it shipped to someone else?
Yes: at checkout enter the name and address of the recipient.
Can I display the print in a venue or publish it?
The print is for personal use, at home or in other private spaces. To display it in public spaces, in a venue or an institution, or to publish the image, you need permission: write to us and we will suggest the right licence.
